R.E. Olds Interactive Museum Kiosk

Client: Impression 5 Science Center

Partners: R.E. Olds Transportation

Timeline: May–July 2024

(Two-Month Production)

Challenge

Impression 5 Science Center wanted to create an interactive experience that could make local history exciting and approachable for kids and families. Their goal was to introduce Ransom Eli Olds, one of Michigan’s most important innovators, through a hands-on, technology-driven exhibit that combined storytelling with motion and interactivity.

The challenge was to build a durable, educational kiosk that could deliver the richness of R.E. Olds’ story while staying fun, intuitive, and visually compelling for young visitors, within a tight two-month development window.

Approach

Haptix Studios collaborated closely with Impression 5 and the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum to ensure both historical accuracy and audience accessibility. The team conducted on-site research at the R.E. Olds Museum, gathering archival photos, factory references, and historical materials related to Olds’ inventions and early automotive work.

A professional actor was cast to perform both voice and full-body motion capture simultaneously, ensuring natural sync between dialogue, expression, and movement. The Haptix team partnered with a specialized external character artist to develop the 3D likeness of R.E. Olds, leveraging the collected museum references for period-accurate clothing, facial features, and props, including a faithful recreation of the Curved Dash Oldsmobile.

Execution

The final experience centers around an interactive kiosk where visitors can select from five different questions to “ask” R.E. Olds. Each button triggers a corresponding motion-captured answer sequence, seamlessly transitioning through an animation state machine that controls idle, response, and return states.

The motion capture process consisted of one prep day and one six-hour performance day. During preparations, Livelink into Unreal was used to preview the scene and blocking to ensure quality results. Using OptiTrack Motive for body capture and Faceware for facial animation, the Haptix team recorded full performance capture synced with timecode. During post-production, the animation team retargeted and constrained two props, a pen and a clipboard, throughout the performances and added detailed hand animation to ensure natural, consistent movement aligned with the actor’s gestures.

All performance data was processed and integrated into Unreal Engine, ensuring high-fidelity visuals with smooth playback and minimal latency. Despite the complexity of the system, the project was completed in just eight weeks, thanks to efficient collaboration between capture, modeling, and technical animation teams.

Results

The completed kiosk became a centerpiece of Impression 5’s push toward interactive educational exhibits, allowing visitors to “speak” directly with one of Lansing’s most influential figures.

The project successfully merged historical storytelling with cutting-edge motion capture and real-time animation, giving children a way to learn through conversation, curiosity, and play.

Feedback from museum staff and families has been overwhelmingly positive — the exhibit has been praised for its accessibility, polish, and ability to spark curiosity about both technology and local history.

Key Highlights

  • Two-month turnaround from concept to installation
  • Professional actor performing synchronized motion and voice capture
  • Historical accuracy through collaboration with the R.E. Olds Museum
  • Five interactive question-and-answer sequences
  • Custom animation state machine for natural response logic
  • Unreal Engine integration optimized for museum-grade deployment
  • Educational target audience: ages 8–14

Designing for Depth

In today’s digital-first world, brands compete not just for attention, but for connection. Sleek visuals and cutting-edge tech may capture the eye, but what truly lingers is the story behind the experience. At our studio, we believe the magic happens where strategy and storytelling intersect—where every pixel is purposeful, and every interaction moves the narrative forward. A flawless strategy can map out every step of the customer journey, but without emotion, it’s just a framework. Think of strategy as the blueprint of a house. It defines the structure, but without thoughtful design and character, the space feels lifeless. Similarly, a digital product that’s strategic but soulless fails to engage users on a deeper level.

On the other hand, storytelling without strategy risks becoming noise. A visually stunning campaign or beautifully animated app might wow audiences at first glance, but without a solid backbone of usability, scalability, and business alignment, it can quickly crumble. Imagine a game with breathtaking graphics but clunky mechanics. The story may captivate, but poor functionality leaves users frustrated and disengaged. A purely strategic product may function flawlessly but feel cold and forgettable, while a purely story-driven experience may inspire briefly but crumble without structure. When these forces unite, brands don’t just deliver a product—they create immersive experiences that users connect with and remember. Whether we’re designing a fitness app, an e-commerce platform, or an interactive campaign, our approach always begins with understanding the brand’s vision and audience, then weaving that insight into thoughtful UX flows, evocative visuals, and micro-interactions that surprise and delight. In a world where users are constantly bombarded with choices, the brands that rise above aren’t simply the ones that look good or work well, but the ones that tell a story worth being part of—backed by seamless strategy. This harmony of logic and magic is how we turn digital products into lasting relationships. In today’s digital-first world, brands compete not just for attention, but for connection.
